LAURA ZARAY
Laura started dancing at the age of 13. She studied Oriental Dance for a few years as a regular student. At the age of 15 she was selected to a performing oriental dance company, directed by the most famous Finnish Oriental Dance pedagogue Tuija Rinne.
Since then, she practised various forms of oriental dance and especially Reda style and Egyptian folklore in the guidance of the best Finnish instructors. Later she joined El Hosseny Dance Company, which is directed by Mohammed el Hosseny & Tuija Rinne. With this company she toured and performed on big stages and dance productions, such as Layali Simsimiyya (Helsinki, Finland) and The World Dances with Mahmoud Reda (Alexandria, Egypt).
Laura was also very fascinated by the Arabic culture, so she was an active member of Masrah Association in Finland. This association aims for increasing the level and publicity of oriental dance as a high quality art form. With Masrah, Laura learn more about organising big events.
In 2010 Laura started organising her own dance show, called Hafla – Night of Oriental Dance. Her principal idea was to invite on stage the best young soloists and groups from Finland and neighboring countries. The show also included a delicious oriental buffet. Hafla quickly became popular gaining more audience each time. It has been a great starting point for many talented young dancers in Finland.
During 2013 Laura was publishing an oriental dance magazine called ”Shimmy”. She edited and collected together material, interviews, lyrics and stories about bellydancing, and published it in four beautiful editions. The magazine was very popular and will most likely be published again, this time the aim is to make it all in English, in order to reach more readers.
During the past 12 years Laura has travelled all around the world, first to study with the best masters of Oriental Dance, then starting an active and successful period of competitions and now, finally touring around festivals teaching and performing.
Few years ago Laura was introduced to couple dance from Angola, KIZOMBA. The music, intimacy and flow of the dance was mesmerizing, and so she started learning intensively with the best teachers. She was lucky to find a professional dancer, Nemanja Sonero (SERBIA/ESTONIA), to teach her more about this fascinating dance style. Her advantage in Kizomba is her great knowledge of bodymovement and techniques. Now she is teaching and performing together with Nemanja.
For Laura, dance is something that offers a great chance to explore, learn and create. It is something that everyone should be able to enjoy. As a performer, she gives herself 100% on stage, exposing herself and connecting with the audience. As a teacher, she is precise and encouraging. For her it is important to share all the knowledge she has, supporting her students to learn and enjoy.
