Prom Date (New Orleans)
Prom Date's first full-length album is a testimony to the complex nature of relationships. The ten songs on Portraits highlight how love grows and fades as the distance between people changes. Drawing influence from synthpop legends such as the Human League and New Order, Portraits dresses everyday issues in fabulous clothing.
The group originated as a friend-rock band with penchant for pop music. Experimentation with electronic instruments drew the group to danceable pop music. Prom Date was born from this synthesizer awakening. As The Rebel Agenda notes, "Louisiana's Prom Date have an 80s aura that exceeds pastiche. Theirs is an 80s electro-pop reverence."
After years of playing across Louisiana, the band settled in New Orleans to hone their sound. A self-titled EP in 2012 resulted in several regional adventures on the way to SXSW. Later that summer, sessions at Magic Ranch Studios in Austin, TX became the cornerstone for Portraits.
Known for energetic live shows filled with glam rock flair, Prom Date has opened for many of Louisiana's finest, including Generationals, GIVERS, Royal Teeth, Alexis & the Samurai, and Vox & the Hound. Prom Date has also remixed other Louisiana friends such as NOLA rapper Boyfriend, Daria & the Hip Drops, Saint Bell, and Bantam Foxes.
In late 2013, Prom Date released their first single, “X My Heart”. A write up on The Truth About Music says the song "perfectly blends their dance-rock style with new wave-era synths" and highlights its "strong emphasis on melody, and the three-part, alternating harmonies of male and female vocals." The music video for the song also reaches into the 80s for influence. The choreographed drama plays out as if Quentin Tarantino redirected Logan’s Run in space.
The second single from the album, “Good Morning, Boyfriend,” was released on July 29th. The accompanying music video celebrates self-acceptance while paying homage to the 80’s comedy adventure film Little Monsters.
Portraits was released on August 5th, and the band will begin touring in September.
White Girl (Kansas City)
